Ice Age Challenge Ski Race to be held on snow this Sunday!

NEWS FLASH! Conditions at Blackhawk are reported to be good, fast, and fun! The cross-country course will be groomed again Sunday morning before the race whether we get snow tonight or not. Coverage is already totally complete and there has been no loss of coverage today. We're looking forward to a fun race tomorrow.

The MadNorSki Ice Age Challenge cross country ski race scheduled for this Sunday, February 20th is a go! A meltdown on the original race course at Elver Park has led event organizers to shift venues to the man-made snow at Blackhawk Ski Club just west of the Madison.

MadNorSki Meeting Monday

What could be more romantic then bringing your sweetheart to this Monday's MadNorSki meeting. We have invited Steve Myrland of Myrland Sports Training to discuss training ideas. Steve has conducted previous training sessions for several MadNorSki members in the past. He has written articles in ski specific publications such as the Master Skier and Birch Schroll. Several collegiate level teams have utilized Steve's expertise in sports conditioning. Come prepared to pick up some new training tips and maybe even try a few.

No lessons on Tuesday night due sad conditions at Elver. If sufficiently good crust skiing can be found (likely at Odana) we might host a session there on Wednesday. Stay tuned. Thanks -- Jimmy VandenBrook

Ski Lessons Go Well
Despite icey conditions, 12 souls (including a brave couple from Georgia!!!) took XC lessons last night at Elver. Thanks to Mike Capp and Don Becker for their help as instructors. Let's hope the sun doesn't degrade the trail too much. We'll try again on Tuesday Feb. 8th at 6pm. But, look at the web-site and/or list-server to confirm next week's lesson offering. -- Jimmy

Elver Race Results

Elver Race Tonight

We will race tonight at Elver Park in Madison. Everyone is welcome to the friendliest, most inexpensive race you'll find in Wisconsin. Course conditions were excellent last night, including some very good tracks (glazed). The shovel brigade was out to make sure that any potentially thin areas would be covered. The City will be grooming the skating lanes this morning.

Registration will be from 5:45 to 6:45 tonight in the shelter. A 2.1K First-Timer race (free) will be held at 6:15 with the 5K and 10K races starting at 7PM.

I already have sufficient volunteers for the race. This should be a great night at Elver with a fast course. Get out there for a great night of skiing while skiing conditions are great!!!

See you tonight. -- Ned Z

Ski-Bikeski Tonight: Watch out for those crazy bikers on your way to race.

Snow Shovel Brigade Tonight at 7 PM (Elver Park)

We're looking for volunteers to help get Elver in shape to race Tuesday night.  Bring shovel, snow scoop, etc.  Meet at the trail head at the lighted loop (next to the blue toilet).  Either walk and shovel/or ski and shovel.  One hour of labor should do it. -- Mike Ivey

Races Planned for Tuesday, February 1st

We're hoping to race tomorrow night at Elver Park in Madison. We would use the standard format of 5K and 10K, claasic and skate, with a mass start at 7PM. If possible, we will hold a First-Timer Race at 6:15PM. Registration from 5:45-6:45.

We'll make the final call on a race by Tuesday noon, using the XC listserve and mobile alert system. -- Ned

January 30th
Free Ski Lessons Planned for Wednesday, February 2nd

X-C lessons be offered on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 6pm at Elver Park instead of Tuesday.  Races will still occur on Tuesday. Please gather for registration at 5:45pm in the Elver Shelter.  Lessons are still FREE! If you are interested in a lesson, please respond via e-mail to me with your preference for classic (striding) or skate technique.  According to the extended forcast it will be pleasantly mild all week.  Thanks to the strong response of instructors we were able to handle roughly 30 souls last week.  Let's take advantage of the snow and mild conditions while we can. -- Thanks, Jimmy VandenBrook, jpvanden@mhtc.net.

Ski Race Planned for Tuesday, January 25th

If the weather cooperates, our next Elver race will be held on Tuesday, January 25. We will include a First-Timer race (2.1K) at 6 PM, with 5K and 10K races at 7 PM. Registration will be from 5:30-6:45 in the park shelter.

If there is sufficient snow for tracks, the event will be designated as "Classic Night". There is no fee for the "First- Timers".

Please contact Ned, nedz@chorus.net, if you can help out as a volunteer. We need 3-4 people for the finish line and out on the course. -- Ned Z

Ski Lessons Planned for Tuesday before the Race

Assuming conditions are OK, the Madison Nordic Ski Club will offer FREE lessons on Tuesday evening, 6 pm, Jan. 25th at Elver Park. Meet in the shelter at 5:45 to get hooked up with your instructor. Please respond to Jimmy, jpvanden@mhtc.net, if you are interested and let me know your preference, skate or classic. Depending on the number of interested folks, I'll line up additional instructors. If you are interested in helping out with instruction please let me know. Response this year has been very good so I'll likely need some help. -- Jimmy V
